Is the Hanalei River good for beginners?
For most people, kayaking the calmer sections of the Hanalei River is an enjoyable experience for beginners.
You don't need to be an experienced kayaker, but you should be comfortable being on the water and able to paddle your kayak.
A few beginner kayaking tips
Use short, steady paddle strokes.
You don't need to paddle as hard as possible. Smooth, consistent strokes are much more efficient.
If you're in a double kayak, the person in the back helps steer.
The front paddler can focus on maintaining a steady rhythm while the back paddler controls the direction.
Wear your life jacket.
Your PFD should remain properly secured while you're on the water.
Keep your belongings dry.
Use a dry bag for your phone, wallet, car keys, and other items that shouldn't get wet.
Bring water.
Kauai's tropical weather can make you more dehydrated than you realize.
What should you bring?
For a Hanalei River kayaking trip, we recommend bringing:
Water
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Hat
Swimsuit or comfortable athletic clothing
Water shoes or sandals that stay securely on your feet
Small snacks
Waterproof phone case or dry bag
Towel
Change of clothes
Don't bring large amounts of unnecessary gear. You'll have a much easier time kayaking with a light, compact setup.
When is the best time to kayak Hanalei?
Morning is generally a great time to kayak.
The mornings are often calmer and cooler, and you'll usually have better conditions for enjoying the scenery.
Weather on Kauai can change quickly, especially on the North Shore.
A light rain shower doesn't necessarily mean you need to cancel your plans. In fact, rain is part of what keeps Hanalei Valley so incredibly green.
Can you kayak from the river into Hanalei Bay?
Hanalei River eventually reaches Hanalei Bay, but river kayaking and ocean kayaking are two different experiences.
Conditions at the river mouth can change significantly depending on swell, wind, tides, and weather.
Do not enter the ocean through the river mouth unless your rental company specifically tells you that conditions are appropriate and that your equipment and rental permit allow it.
Ocean conditions can become dangerous much faster than the calm river.
Hanalei River kayaking and families
Hanalei can be a great family adventure.
Children should always be supervised by an adult and wear an appropriately fitted life jacket.
Double kayaks are often a good choice for families because an adult can paddle with a child.
Check your rental company's specific age and weight requirements before booking.
